In a remarkable exposition of authority, Zimbabwe’s ruling party, ZANU PF has seemingly unleashed its iron fist against the youth, who are beleaguered and feeling the cold alienation emanating from economic mismanagement and constitutional rights infringement. Their woes have driven them to embrace peaceful protests, albeit met with swift, unsympathetic reactions from the ruling elite. Amidst this tumult, a peculiar segment of the society has thrived, deftly evading the so-called long arm of the law.

PARTISAN POLICING AND THE STRUGGLE FOR ASSEMBLY RIGHTS

ZANU PF’s alleged politically charged utilisation of the police, predominantly serving its agenda of unconstitutional power retention, has ushered in a concerning era of rule-by-law. This development has spawned impunity and legal warfare, particularly targeting opposition youth endeavouring to peacefully exercise their constitutional assembly rights. The suppressed right to congregate and voice dissatisfaction has left the youth feeling both frustrated and powerless.

JUDICIAL MANIPULATION AND THE VICTIMS OF LEGAL WARFARE

When peaceful assemblies face suppression, the ruling party’s alleged manipulation of a compromised judiciary comes to the forefront, unleashing a storm of legal offensives. Notable figures like Mamombe, Chirova, and Chidziva find themselves ensnared in this legal quagmire. ZANU PF’s aversion to democratic change, which threatens its firm grip over the nation, is palpably displayed in its hostile response to transformation advocates.

FROM YOUTH UNREST TO FACTIONAL GANGS

As the turmoil, stirred by rogue youth elements in gold-rich provinces, amplifies, ZANU PF’s intervention becomes glaringly apparent. Factionalism, further inflamed by rule-by-law and impunity, has sprouted, morphing into quasi-terrorist groups with affiliations to various ZANU PF factions. Their primary role appears to be safeguarding the interests of the party, its proxies, and associated clientele, all deeply enmeshed in illegal gold smuggling ventures.

ZANU PF’S TWISTED NARRATIVE AND OPPOSITION MACHINATIONS

The ruling party is alleged to have marshalled these youth elements to smear the opposition’s image. The violent, machete-wielding gangs, refashioned to masquerade as disgruntled opposition members, play into ZANU PF’s narrative. This diversionary tactic, epitomised by the distribution of printed t-shirts for these so-called defectors, aims at entrenching ZANU PF’s power hold, even if it heralds a failing state.

FUELING UNREST THROUGH MILITANT RECRUITMENT

Discontent with the gold mining status, ZANU PF has purportedly enlisted a new generation from the artisanal mining sector, particularly war veterans’ offspring, by granting them gold claims. This starkly contrasts the treatment of war veterans who faced land and rights loss.

ZANU PF’S DOWNWARD SPIRAL

ZANU PF’s reluctance towards reform is a perilous voyage, with short-sightedness and miscalculations steering towards its demise. The favour towards parasitical war veterans’ progeny has deepened its military control, with disillusioned military elements resorting to criminality due to unfulfilled promises.

THE LOOMING TURNING POINT

As 2023 beckons, ZANU PF’s stranglehold might encounter a turning point. The economic decay and rogue military elements could potentially coerce the party towards much-needed reforms. The upcoming elections could catalyse a transition from ZANU PF’s stronghold, spelling a precarious yet hopeful juncture in Zimbabwe’s political trajectory. The signs are glaring; ZANU PF’s control web is fragile, and only systemic reforms can sever its entangling strands, paving the path towards a more democratically robust Zimbabwe.
