In a tale of stark contrasts, Zimbabwe’s police and military forces appear to be dwelling in an oasis of privilege amidst a desert of despair inhabited by the terrorised masses. The narrative of a nation in distress under the clutches of the looting, self-enrichment obsessed ZANU PF, presents a grim backdrop to the apparent oasis the security forces seem to be enjoying. This gaping chasm between the enforcers and the enfeebled not only mirrors the parlous state of Zimbabwe but also foretells a region in jeopardy of security and humanitarian crises akin to the tumult witnessed in West Africa.

The stifling stranglehold of ZANU PF has orchestrated a catastrophic dance of decay that has left the state paralysed, poised on the precipice of failure—a fate which inevitably beckons regional destabilisation, plunging it into a vortex of crises. Amidst this despondency, the police and military—the impoverished yet partisan enforcers—stand as the unyielding pillars of a regime that is failing spectacularly. Their seeming insulation from the dire straits faced by the common populace paints a disheartening picture of divided destinies.

Zimbabwe’s security apparatus, despite their impoverishment, seem to be ensconced in a cocoon of partisanship which shields them from the harsh realities that have ensnared the masses. Their realm, though juxtaposed against a backdrop of tyranny, looting, and self-enrichment by the political echelons, is a heaven in comparison to the hell the oppressed masses are condemned to. The rank and file of these forces not only enjoy a life detached from the abysmal living conditions of the masses but also stand as the bulwarks of the very apparatus that perpetuates this misery.

As the impoverished masses grapple with unemployment, food insecurity, and an exorbitantly high cost of living coupled with a stark deprivation of essential services, the police and military seem to have their own sanctuaries. Their exclusive access to essential amenities such as hospitals and schools, and an alleged special currency immune to inflation, underscores the egregious inequality that pervades Zimbabwean society.

This tale of two realms—the enforcers and the enfeebled—encapsulates a nation in disarray, shackled by a political enterprise hell-bent on plunder and power retention at the expense of human rights and constitutional liberties. The terror unleashed on the masses, as evidenced in the 2018 post-election violence and the unlawful detention of opposition figures like Job Sikhala, reinforces the grim reality of a nation held hostage by its own enforcers.

The dire repercussions of this political illegitimacy and unconstitutional power retention by ZANU PF not only threaten to thrust Zimbabwe further into the abyss but also jeopardise regional stability. This looming calamity warrants an urgent introspection and a robust response from regional bodies to avert a descent into a quagmire that could reverberate across the southern African region.
