In a world where the essence of democracy is rooted in the freedom of speech and expression, the unfolding scenario in Zimbabwe sets a chilling narrative of what happens when these fundamental rights are smothered under the guise of law and order. Zimbabwe, a nation whose political landscape has long been punctuated with cries for justice and transparency, now faces an escalating crisis of freedom. With the backdrop of the global Covid-19 pandemic, the government’s recent actions cast a long, dark shadow over the aspirations of its citizens for a fair and just society.

As a native Zimbabwean, now residing in the United Kingdom, I, Owen Tapiwa Nyakuwanikwa, have witnessed first-hand the impact of corruption and the weaponisation of the justice system in my homeland. Despite my personal journey of reformation, my spirit to fight against corruption remains undeterred. As I observe the recent developments in Zimbabwe from afar, the iron grip of injustice tightening around the throats of those daring to speak out sends shivers down my spine.

The emergence of the global pandemic has only served as a veil for the government to intensify its oppressive antics. Under the pretext of enforcing lockdown measures to curb the spread of the virus, the Zimbabwean authorities have unleashed a reign of terror upon its citizens. Through its brutal security apparatus comprising the Central Intelligence Organization (CIO), junta, and the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the government has orchestrated a campaign of fear and suppression.

Citizens who have found the courage to voice out against the government’s lack of financial support during the lockdown have been met with a ferocious backlash. The justice system, a supposed pillar of fairness and protection, has now become a tool for the government to legitimize its brutal crackdown on dissent. Students, journalists, political activists, and ordinary citizens alike are being arrested, abducted, raped, and detained without bail. Their crime? Daring to challenge the corruption, looting of state funds, and the government’s abysmal response to the pandemic that continues to ravage the globe.

The tales of horror don’t end with just arrests and abductions. The denial of bail to detainees showcases a justice system that dances to the whims of political despots, rather than the tune of justice and equity. The voices that strive to unveil the corruption and mismanagement of state resources are being stifled, and the bearers of these voices face a grim fate in the dungeons of oppression.

This escalating crisis not only threatens the democratic fabric of Zimbabwe but sets a dangerous precedent for other nations grappling with the balance between governance and human rights. The world cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the atrocities unfolding within Zimbabwe’s borders.

As I continue to share my narrative and reflections on this platform, it is my earnest desire to shed light on the dark corners of injustice both in Zimbabwe and beyond. The road to a corruption-free society may be long and fraught with peril, but it is a journey we must undertake. Even as the shadows of my past follow me, my resolve to contribute to a brighter, more just society remains steadfast. Through our collective voices and actions, we can challenge the status quo and strive for a world where justice is not a privilege, but a right duly accorded to all.
